Key Evidence-Based Practices for Supporting Children and Youth with Autism: A Comprehensive Overview.

This systematic review presents a comprehensive update on effective practices for children and youth with autism. Building on previous research, it covers studies published between 1990 and 2017, identifying 28 focused intervention practices that meet the criteria for evidence-based practice (EBP). The review involved screening over 31,000 articles, with 972 studies ultimately included in the analysis.

The findings highlight the importance of using scientifically validated interventions in educational and therapeutic settings, especially given the increasing prevalence of autism. The review also explores the implications of these practices for both current professional applications and future research. It identifies gaps in research, particularly regarding interventions related to race, ethnicity, gender, and age-specific needs.

Additionally, the review introduces five new EBPs and identifies 10 manualized interventions that also meet the criteria for EBP. This work reinforces the critical role of evidence-based practices in enhancing the development and well-being of children and youth with autism, offering valuable guidance for educators, clinicians, and researchers.
